Pregnant women beware! ZIKV in rainy season

Pregnant women beware! ZIKV in rainy season Pregnant women beware! ZIKV in rainy season Pregnant women beware! ZIKV in rainy season

Apart from morning sickness that some pregnant women have to deal with, during the rainy season with fluctuating weather conditions – some days being hot, while others rainy – they will feel more uncomfortable than usual. This entails not only taking care of their health but also being aware of symptoms when starting pregnancy. Moreover, there is a silent danger that pregnant women must be cautious of, namely the ZIKV (ZIKV) that emerges during the rainy season. Therefore, let us acquaint ourselves with this harmful virus and prepare to tackle it together.

• Introducing ZIKV

In the past few years, several countries around the world, including Thailand, have experienced unusual incidents involving newborns. Specifically, some newborns were found having smaller heads than normal. After extensive investigations to uncover the root cause, it was ultimately found that the cause of this abnormality was a virus known as 'Zika.'

With the increasing medical data, it has become evident that ZIKV infection can be transmitted from a mother to her child. The primary vector of this virus is the mosquito itself. ZIKV shares mosquitoes as a vector, like diseases such as dengue fever. However, what sets ZIKV infection in pregnant mothers apart is its impact on the developing fetus. Fetuses infected through maternal transmission often exhibit microcephaly, which can lead to short- and long-term brain abnormalities. These abnormalities may include seizures, hearing or vision loss, or future learning difficulties, among others. Currently, there is no standardized treatment for these abnormalities.

Due to these circumstances, ZIKV infection has become increasingly significant for pregnant mothers today. This is primarily because there is currently no vaccine for prevention, and the symptoms of the disease range from asymptomatic to fever, rash, red eyes, and joint pain, which are non-specific, making diagnosis challenging.

• Basic protection for pregnant women against ZIKV
Take precautions to prevent water from accumulating within your premises or leave stagnant water. This helps to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs around your house. Most importantly, "avoid mosquito bites."

Currently, the best advice for preventing ZIKV infection is "using mosquito repellent" containing essential ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, icaridin, IR3535, or para-menthane-dial (PMD). Additionally, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants or avoiding areas with mosquitos is recommended.

With love and concern from BabyLove, may pregnant mothers pass through morning sickness and maintain strong physical health for both mothers and their little ones during pregnancy.
