Pregnancy is not always safe for women. It may be risky depending on many factors, both the health of the mother and the fetus, apart from frequency in taking care of mothers’ body. Besides the morning sickness which is one of the symptoms to be careful of when starting pregnancy, there are 5 complications that are common and can be divided according to the gestational age in each trimester. They are:

Complications usually found during the 1st gestational age (0 - 14 weeks):

1. Miscarriage

2. Ectopic pregnancy
Both conditions have the same initial symptoms, namely bleeding from the vagina or abdominal pain. They often occur in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and lead to termination of pregnancy. As a result, pregnant women in the first trimester must be careful and observe themselves if there is any bleeding from the vagina or not. If detected, it is advisable to see a doctor for further examination.

Complications usually found during the 2nd gestational age (14 - 28 weeks):
It is the gestational period where there is very little chance of complications because the placenta works well, and the baby is in the growth and development stages. Nonetheless, possible complications that must be promptly taken care of is:

3. placenta previa
In most pregnancies, the placenta is usually firmly attached to the upper part of the uterus. However, in some pregnancies, the placenta clings to the lower part of the uterus near or covering the cervix, causing the adhesion of the placenta in the said area not as strong as the upper part. If the uterus is contracting, some placenta will be dislodged from its attachment position, resulting in bleeding from the vagina. Therefore, if the mother has bleeding from the vagina in the second trimester, she must seek immediate medical attention.

Complications usually found during the 3rd gestational age (28 - 40 weeks):
It is the near birth period. Therefore, mothers must observe themselves more carefully because the major complications at this stage are:

4. Premature labor
This condition is found in about 10%-15% of all pregnancies. The most common initial symptom is abdominal stiffness, of which frequency is at least 8 cycles per hour. Some people may have water or bleeding from the vagina as well. Therefore, if the mother has such symptoms, she must urgently see a doctor in order to stop the unexpected labor and prolong the pregnancy as long as possible.

5. Preeclampsia or gestational hypertension
It is a dangerous complication and can cause seizures or death in a mother. Major risk groups include pregnant women who had pre-eclampsia before, obesity, and has congenital diseases related to the vascular system, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain types of kidney disease. The most common initial symptom is headaches associated with elevated blood pressure. At-risk mothers are advised to take early antenatal care as current care procedures include preventive medications and reduce the chance of pre-eclampsia. For mothers who are not at risk, it is recommended to keep an eye on the symptoms. If you have a headache, blood pressure should be measured. When symptoms are suspected, if the upper blood pressure is greater than or equal to 140 or the lower blood pressure is greater than or equal to 90, you need to see a doctor.

All 5 conditions can be frightening and severe. However, if you start antenatal care from the first trimester and have regular antenatal care as well as regularly observing abnormal symptoms during pregnancy, it will help a doctor for a better diagnosis and prompt treatment. We wish you a happy pregnancy and mild morning sickness.
