Rash is a problem parents have usually faced since the birth of their children. It occurs for many reasons, varying according to age. This article will give information on rashes among newborn babies which mothers have to realize.

Infants from birth to 3 months often have many types of rashes that occur normally. They are:

  • A red bump with a small blister in the middle. (erythema toxicum) It occurs in the first week after childbirth and will last for a couple of days. Then, it disappears without any medical requirement.
  • Heat rash It is a small clear blister on the forehead or scalp. When it appears, it will gradually peel off into small sheets by itself. To
prevent it, parents should not use too many clothes for their children or cover babies with too many diapers.
  • Sebaceous gland inflammation (seborrheic dermatitis) It is a red bump with yellow scales on the scalp and eyebrows of infants. It is
caused by changes in hormonal levels. The rash may increase in the first 1-2 months, then it will gradually get better. Applying moisturizing cream on babies’ skin will help make it disappear.

  • Rashes caused by diapers They are caused by humidity or irritation from stools. The problem can be prevented in case parents use
gentle and effectively absorbent diapers. Otherwise, they should change diapers every 3 or 4 hours and use anti-rash cream at any
    time.

Another type of rash that most parents often worry about is the one caused by skin allergies(Atopic Dermatitis) It is caused by an abnormal structure of the skin, causing a lot of water loss from the skin and making the skin dry and easily inflamed. In children under 2 years of age, it usually appears on their cheeks, forehead, neck, outer arms and legs, wrist and ankle whereas, in older children, it is often found in the folds of the arms, legs, feet, and ankles.

Atopic Dermatitis or skin allergies can be categorized according to the following symptoms:

  • a red itchy rash that can occur from the acute phase; red, itchy blisters containing lymph in the subacute phase; in the chronic phase, they will become thick patches on skin.
  • Rash that appears on different body parts according to age, such as cheeks, forehead, neck, outer arms and legs, wrists, ankles in infants, and those often found on the arm or leg folds. It is regarded as chronic or intermittent dermatitis.
  • In case people in the immediate family have allergies, risks of this disease will increase, such as allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis,
    asthma.

In case of a rash caused by skin allergies, parents should take their babies to see a doctor for a specific diagnosis and find a treatment. In this article, there are some tips for taking care of the delicate skin of newborns:

  1. Always keep your baby's skin clean. When your baby's skin touches feces, urine, or spit milk, use a cotton swab moistened with water to wipe the affected area every time. Avoid using wet wipes that may contain chemicals, antibacterial or perfume;
  2. Babies should wear light and comfortable clothes made from soft fabric which is not irritating easily. They should avoid clothes that are too thick to prevent them from heat rash and rashes.
  3. Use detergents that are chemical and fragrance free and rinse clothes with water until they are clean and avoid using fabric softener.
  4. Do not give babies a bath that is too warm. Use a shower cream that does not contain perfume once in the evening. Avoid natural extracts made from food, such as milk, oatmeal, wheat flour, etc., and use only water to cleanse your baby in the morning.
  5. Apply anti diaper rash cream every time you change diapers to protect your baby's delicate skin
