‘Postpartum depression’: a symptom new mother should be aware ‘Postpartum depression’: a symptom new mother should be aware ‘Postpartum depression’: a symptom new mother should be aware

Many people consider that pregnancy might be the happiest time for a mother. Yet, during pregnancy, mothers necessarily go through many physical changes, such as weight gain, morning sickness, and even psychological stresses from the beginning of pregnancy to after delivery. Therefore, they must not be left to suffer those symptoms by themselves. Fathers and people close to pregnant mothers can take care of them. The postpartum depression is another equally important symptom that not only mothers and those around them should be aware of since some pregnant women have to face with such emotional and physical changes.

The postpartum depression likely occurs from hormone levels that change rapidly after the baby deliver. This symptom usually takes place right after delivering a baby and might persist for 1 to 2 weeks.

The important time to be aware and keep an eye on is the 2 weeks after mothers deliver babies.

Typical symptoms are as follows:

  • mood swings.
  • worry and anxiety.
  • unreasonable or too much crying.
  • less concentration.
  • less appetite; and
  • sleeping problem

Mothers suffering from the postpartum depression might develop more severe symptoms and might isolate themselves from others, ignore preferred activities, get upset easily and might be unable to create relationship with their babies as they likely think that they are not good mothers. Some will feel despair and guilty while others have problems on sleeping and eating habits. Many of them might feel desperate, exhausted in life, lack concentration in living and might think about harming children or feel suicidal.

Besides mothers, fathers can develop the postpartum depression, as well. Their symptoms are not different from mothers’ and are frequent among the young ones who suffered from depression in the past or those who have financial problems or past relationship problems which could affect the present family life.

In case the symptoms persist or do not improve after 2 weeks, it is recommendable to visit a doctor for early diagnosis. If the symptoms are not taken care of, they might become so severe that the daily life of the mother and the family is affected. However, ‘families’ play a crucial role to enable mothers to go through the postpartum depression without any problems.
